The Weight of the Wrong Assignment
She sat at her desk, staring at the endless to-do list in front of her.
Emails unanswered. Projects half-finished. The laundry still piled in the corner. A meeting scheduled for later that she had no energy for.
Her chest felt tight, her mind foggy. She had once been excited about this life—about the career she built, the opportunities she prayed for, the responsibilities she now held. But lately, it all felt different.
Heavy.
And she couldn’t figure out why.
She had always been the person who could handle it all. The friend everyone depended on. The one who said yes even when she wanted to say no. The woman who prided herself on multitasking, managing, and making it all look effortless.
But lately, something felt off. She wasn’t just tired—she was drained, empty, and burdened in a way she couldn’t explain.
One night, in utter exhaustion, she whispered a quiet prayer:
"God, why does this feel so heavy?"
And the answer came, not as a loud voice, but as a gentle realization pressing on her heart:
"Because you are carrying things I never asked you to pick up."
When the Load Feels Unbearable
We’ve all been there, haven’t we?
The moment when what once felt purposeful now feels suffocating. When the work, the commitments, the relationships—even the dreams—start to feel like weights rather than gifts.
Jesus knew we would experience this. That’s why He gave us a different way:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
— Matthew 11:28-30
God’s assignments for us come with grace.
That doesn’t mean life will always be easy, but it means we won’t feel crushed under the weight of it.
Yet so often, we pick up things we were never meant to carry:
Saying yes to responsibilities out of guilt instead of calling.
Pursuing a career because it’s expected rather than because we’re passionate about it.
Overcommitting in ministry or business because we feel like we have to prove ourselves.
Carrying other people’s burdens to the point of neglecting our own well-being.
The weight becomes unbearable when it’s not ours to hold.
Are You Holding the Wrong Assignment?
I once had a conversation with a client who had built an incredible life for herself. She was successful, respected, admired—but also deeply unhappy.
She told me, “I don’t know why, but I feel like I’m suffocating. I have everything I thought I wanted, but I feel so far from myself… and honestly, so far from God.”
As we talked, she began to uncover something profound:
She had spent years building a career she never actually wanted—one that looked good on paper, one that impressed people, but one that had never truly been hers.
The weight of it all was unbearable because it was never her assignment to begin with.
It was a hard realization, but it was also freeing.
Because when she finally acknowledged that truth, she had a choice:
Keep carrying what was never hers—or surrender and step into what God actually had for her.
Reflection: What Do You Need to Let Go Of?
Maybe you’re feeling the same way. Maybe there’s something in your life that feels heavier than it should.
Ask yourself:
Am I exhausted because I’m striving instead of surrendering?
Am I doing this out of purpose—or out of pressure?
Did God actually assign this to me, or did I take it on myself?
If the weight feels unbearable, it may not be yours to carry.
It’s Time to Release the Unnecessary Weight
Here’s the truth:
Surrender isn’t failure—it’s freedom.
It’s choosing to trust that God’s plan is better than our need to control. That His assignments bring peace, not pressure. That when we let go of what we were never meant to hold, our hands are finally free to receive what was always meant for us.
